The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is designed for managers, supervisors and anyone with health and safety responsibilities who needs a broad understanding of occupational health and safety and the practical skills to help manage workplace risks effectively.

The qualification consists of two units: GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety and GIC2 – Risk Assessment, covering 11 syllabus elements. The qualification follows the 2025 NEBOSH specification.

Subjects

Unit GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety

• Element 1: Why we should manage workplace health and safety – Covers the moral, financial and legal reasons for managing health and safety effectively. It also considers how health and safety is regulated, the main duties of those involved in the workplace, and the important role of contractors and how they should be managed.
• Element 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like – Introduces health and safety management systems, their key components and the role of a health and safety policy in providing a structured approach to managing occupational health and safety.
• Element 3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes – Covers health and safety culture and how it can be improved, human factors and their influence on behaviour, risk assessment, management of change, safe systems of work, permit-to-work systems, emergency procedures and first aid.
• Element 4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring – Covers active and reactive monitoring, incident investigation, recording and reporting, auditing and reviewing the effectiveness of health and safety arrangements.

Unit GIC2 – Risk Assessment

• Element 5: Physical and psychological health – Covers a range of physical and psychological health hazards, including noise, vibration, radiation, mental ill health, work-related violence and substance abuse.
• Element 6: Musculoskeletal health – Covers musculoskeletal disorders, including work-related upper limb disorders, manual handling and mechanical load-handling equipment.
• Element 7: Chemical and biological agents – Covers the hazards associated with chemical and biological agents and the principles of appropriate control measures.
• Element 8: General workplace issues – Covers a wide range of workplace hazards and controls, including welfare, working at height, confined spaces, lone working, slips and trips, workplace transport and work-related driving.
• Element 9: Work equipment – Covers hazards and control measures associated with work equipment, including hand tools, power tools and machinery.
• Element 10: Fire – Covers fire hazards, prevention and protection measures, including fire detection and alarm systems, prevention of fire spread and emergency evacuation.
• Element 11: Electricity – Covers electrical hazards and the typical control measures used to prevent injury and ill health arising from electrical systems and equipment.

Assessment

The qualification has two assessments:

• GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety: a scenario-based open book examination (OBE) completed through the NEBOSH online assessment platform.
• GIC2 – Risk Assessment: a practical workplace risk assessment in which learners identify hazards, assess risks and develop an action plan.

Assessment details

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (IGC) consists of two unit assessments: GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety and GIC2 – Risk Assessment.

Learners must achieve a pass in both units to be awarded the qualification. The overall qualification grade is based on the result achieved in GIC1 and GIC2. The grading boundaries are:

• Distinction: 75+
• Credit: 65–74
• Pass: 45–64
• Refer: 0–44

The examinations for the qualification must be completed within five years. This five-year period begins on the date the learner passes their first successful unit (the declaration date). Any unit that is five or more years old will no longer count towards the qualification, and the learner will need to retake the affected unit(s), unless an extension to the unit validity period has been approved.

Assessment type

Unit GIC1 – Management of Health and Safety

GIC1 is a 24-hour scenario-based open book examination (OBE) conducted through the NEBOSH digital assessment platform.

Learners are given a scenario and questions designed to assess their understanding and application of the knowledge covered in the unit. The assessment also includes a closing interview, during which learners may be asked questions about their submission.

Unit GIC2 – Risk Assessment

GIC2 is a practical risk assessment. Learners complete a risk assessment of a workplace and develop an action plan to address the risks identified.

The practical assessment is submitted digitally through the NEBOSH Assessment Platform. Submission deadlines are set by NEBOSH and learners should confirm the applicable assessment date and submission arrangements with their Learning Partner.

Assessment dates

NEBOSH publishes assessment dates throughout the year. Learners should work with their Learning Partner to select and register for the appropriate assessment sitting.

GIC1 assessment dates and GIC2 submission deadlines are published by NEBOSH and may vary according to language and assessment period.

Examination and assessment fees

We offer assistance with assessment registration and booking; however, NEBOSH assessment fees are not included in the course fee.

For the 2026/27 fee year, the NEBOSH assessment registration fee is:

• GIC1 – £95
• GIC2 – £95

These fees are charged per unit assessment/assignment.
